First steps to success - Sarajevo to Freiburg and back
“Sometimes writing only one e-mail can lead to education or employment opportunities,” says Nermin Đuzić, a talented BH Futures Foundation student.
Having narrowly missed out on a BH Futures Foundation scholarship, Nermin received an e-mail offer from the foundation to participate in the Mentorship Program.
Today, under the guidance of his mentor, Dr Ebrahim Hassan, an expert in the fields of infectious diseases, immunology and virology, Nermin is completing an internship at the Institute of Virology of the University of Freiburg, Germany.
The International Burch University master’s student, who has worked on several scientific projects in genetics and bioengineering, is executive editor of BurchGene magazine, the only publication covering those fields in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Last year Nermin completed an internship at the Federal Institute for Agriculture in Sarajevo.
While working alongside his mentor in an international scientific setting, Nermin says BH Futures Foundation’s Mentorship Program “is an offer which you cannot refuse if you are looking for better career prospects”.
“Biomedical engineering and bioinformatics are experiencing a rise in Europe and our country as well,” Nermin says. “I am aiming to get as much knowledge and experience abroad, which I can share with other young people in my country when I come back. We can provide an example, inspiration and motivation to each other.”
His message to other students is to courageously take that first step towards realising a dream. “Sometimes the first step is the most difficult and if we manage to overcome barriers preventing us from taking it, success is guaranteed.”
BH Futures Foundationfounder Eddie Čustović says: “We are inspired by Nermin’s achievements and attitude. Not only will Nermin benefit from learning from his mentor, but Nermin’s colleagues, too, once he returns to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Helping talented and compassionate future leaders like Nermin on the path to professional success is our foundation’s mission.”
