Design workshop in Srebrenica Futures Makerspace

If you follow us, you must have seen how much value we put on sharing knowledge and giving back to the community. This is the main reason why we opened the Future Makerspace in Srebrenica.

Its main goal is to give education opportunities to all students and youngsters in Srebrenica and the local area. Also, this is a great experience for our scholars who get the opportunity to teach others and, in such a way, become more experienced and inspire future entrepreneurs and leaders.

About a month after its opening in July, Makerspace in Srebrenica became the host for many students and workshops that have been held here as part of the Futures Makerspace Program. Through our work in Srebrenica this summer, we recognized that basic education in Web Development, Design and Business skills could create new business opportunities for young people in the region. So our team developed this program that has three Modules based on these skills.

The whole of September was reserved for Web development Module, where workshops on various programming languages and tools were held by our scholars. Denis Muratović and Ivana Stjepić held the HTML & CSS workshop. Mihajlo Milosavljević, Muhamed Isabegovic, and Mersiha Ćeranić taught Javascript, while Ognjen Stefanović explained WordPress.

On the 12th of October, the second module “Design” was officially introduced to the participants by our member Vildana Hrnjić. As our main Graphic Designer, she introduced students to the basics of Adobe Illustrator.

Vildana was traveling from Banja Luka to be a lecturer in Srebrenica but based on her words the trip was worth it.

Srebrenica is a small place so I did not expect a lot of participants. However, a few youngsters that are coming regularly to our workshops, turned out to be real gems. Some of them already worked in Adobe Illustrator, so they were excited to share their work with me.

On the first day, we went through all the basic tools in Adobe Illustrator. For me, it was important to show them that this program is easy and if they have a good idea that they will always find the right steps to deliver it.

The next day, I gave them the task to make a visual design by themselves. They received all the necessary material and instructions, so they had a chance to feel like real graphic designers. I was there more as a back-up if they get stuck technically. We end up staying there for over three hours instead of one hour and a half as the workshop is planned.

And then, I realized that it is Sunday. Other youngsters are wasting their opportunities and these kids did the extra step. They stayed longer because they are hungry for knowledge.

Also, the visual turned up pretty good. Great job Haris, Mihajlo and Marica! I must say that I was quite proud.

More scholars and members of our Foundation will share their knowledge during the Design and Business module, so stay tuned!
