Inaugural Bosnia & Herzegovina 3MT Competition Results Announced
With the announcement of the winners and the awarding of valuable cash prizes at an online ceremony held on the 12th of January 2021, the first 3MT competition in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which brought together 70 Bosnia & Herzegovina PhD students from eminent universities from 21 countries around the world has concluded. The competition lasted for just over 3 months and the winners were judged by an expert panel of 22 academics (see list here) in two rounds. The three-minute thesis (3MT) competition challenges Ph.D students to communicate the significance of their projects to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes.
The first place and a cash prize in the amount of 3,000 euros was won by Nudžeim Selimović from the University of Zurich. Second place and 2,000 euros went to Almir Aljović from Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, and third place and 1,000 euros went to Emina Šunje, who is doing her doctoral studies at the universities of Antwerp and Sarajevo.
During the last month of the competition, the presentations of the contestants were also available on the YouTube channel of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Futures Foundation, where the audience was able vote and choose their winner by clicking on the thumbs up. Zerina Kurtović from the Karolinska Institute Sweden won this category with nearly 15,000 views of her video.
Na svečanoj ceremoniji okupljenoj masi u ulozi gosta predavača obratio se profesor sa splitskog univerziteta i CERNA Ivica Puljak, poznati naučnik, član tima koji je otkrio Higgsov bozon.
"This project is world class, and reason, science and humanism are the foundations of the world. Today we live in an era of acceleration, and the only way to survive is to move as fast as a river. Science broadens our horizons and makes us citizens of the world," Puljak said. and invited all young people to be scientists, share knowledge and constantly explore.
The 3MT competition provided students and opportunity to develop their academic, presentation, research and communication skills by explaining their research to an audience outside their field of research.
We are extremely proud to have gathered so many young Bosnia & Herzegovina researchers and introduced the public to their work. We hope that this competition will serve as inspiration and an indicator for everyone that research and effort always pay off, and that Bosnia and Herzegovina has huge research potential. which, unfortunately, we are not familiar enough with.
The competition was organized for the first time in Bosnia and Herzegovina and paved the foundation for the next steps towards the promotion of science and the importance of scientific research. A 3MT competition for undergraduate and master's students will be held in 2021, and 2022 is again reserved for PhD students.
