Hello Sydney: Screening of "Return to Bosnia"
On Tuesday 10th September, the Bosnia and Herzegovina community in Sydney had the opportunity to attend the screening of a documentary called ‘Return to Bosnia’; a documentary related to suffering, displacement and many other calamities caused by the Bosnian war in the 90s.
Damir Mitric’s documentary, ‘Return to Bosnia’, showed what effect the war had on his childhood on his family and his country. It showed what kind of effect it has today, more than 25 years later. The documentary was then followed by a discussion about what our diaspora can do in order to help the youth of Bosnia and Herzegovina create a harmonious and prosperous future.
The documentary is open ended, not providing any answers to what happened but rather acts as a conversation starter.
The documentary screening took place in Palace Cinemas, as a part of an event called ‘Bosnia and Herzegovina: The Past and The Future’. The documentary screening was co-organized with Bosnia and Herzegovina Future Foundation, with the goal of introducing attendees with the work of the foundation.
Edhem Eddie Custovic had the opportunity to present what the Foundation does and how it tries to, with the lessons from the past in mind, ameliorate a lot of suffering by focusing the energy of our diaspora in creating opportunities for young people to be successful by giving them opportunities to be the best version of themselves.
During the Q & A segment, attendees learned about many things the foundation offers to youth in our homeland. Our foundation scholar, currently on a research internship in Australia, Rijad Saric, spoke about his personal experiences with the Foundation and how it has helped him excel in his career with the vast opportunities it provides.
The event ended with a networking session, where people had the chance to meet and also know more about the work of Damir Mitric, Eddie Custovic, and the organization they are so proudly apart of.
Most of the attendees indicated that they were willing to get involved and help the youth of Bosnia & Herzegovina. As this was the foundation’s first event in Sydney, we look forward to working with our new friends and colleagues in achieving our goals.
All ticket proceeds from the event were donated to the foundation in order to continue doing the amazing work it does in empowering the youth of Bosnia & Herzegovina. BH Futures Foundation thanks the University of Technology Sydney for supporting the event.
