Let's Talk About Diaspora - Ali Mokayes in Munich
Land, forests, minerals, water and... diaspora. Our major resources, or so it should be, guess which one we are not fully utilizing or realizing to its fullest potential? (Hint: Read the article title again)
Sure, your aunt/uncle comes from abroad, gives you a few $ or €, you go buy yourself a nice pair of sneakers and you call it a day. But what about the greater community, the whole country, what about you in the end? Yes, you, you could have spent that money way better, saved it, invested it, etc. And yes, for our country, there were investments, funds raised, etc... and where did that lead us? Well, just take a ride on our < 200 km long freeway, then "enjoy" the answer to that question.
This past weekend I attended the event hosted by the B&H Consulate in Munich, and organized by Pangea, our Foundation, and Masterwerk on the topic of "Knowledge Transfer and How to Establish a Successful Mentoring Program". In this capacity, it probably has been for the first time ever that two organizations and one company teamed up to organize this kind of an event and to open up a discussion which has shown and yielded a positive wave that transcends all the trivialities and opens up a plethora of opportunities in the near and far future for our youth.
During this event, we've already managed to secure internships for our students, make a firm partnership with two more organizations, and hopefully build towards a critical mass that will help drive the change in our country.
A notable thing worth mentioning is that most of over the 60 attendees were young professionals who've established themselves far away from home, and more importantly they are willing to help the youth in our country in any capacity that they are able to. I am looking forward towards what the future holds for us as well as our diaspora. And a final note to wrap it all up, next time you think about diaspora, think about what you can learn from them and their experiences, and then move on from there.
