The power of mentorship - Momčilo Amović
One of the most precious, popular and useful Foundation’s activities is its Mentorship program, where we match students with professionals from the same or similar relevant field of study. In that way, we pursue further growth and development of our scholars. This program has been launched a few years ago, and the fact is that many scholars got the most out of it, through internships, conferences abroad and similar activities. We are proud of our scholars. This time we have conducted an interview with one of such scholars, Momčilo Amović, who has really achieved amazing and outstanding performance during his mentorship activities.
Momo, how did you become aware of the mentorship program?
I've always been aware that people are always stronger as a team and that joint forces are much better than a single player. While I was meeting professionals from my field of study, I realized that all of them have something in common-they have mentors not matter how old they are! Related to that I didn't think too much when I got the chance to apply for the mentorship program in Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation. It was a great decision and since then my career is growing rapidly.
Tell us more about your mentor and his occupation?
My mentor is Amer Grgić. He is originally from Bosnia and Herzegovina but he lives a long time in the Netherlands. Right now, he is a CTO at Tevreden.nl Rotterdam and except that, he's doing a lot of different things like being a host in Bits vs. Bytes podcast, mentoring students etc.
Describe your initial mentoring meetings and experience?
We started within professional manner and in beginning, we were strongly oriented to tasks of the mentoring program. But like it happens often, mentoring soon becomes a friendship and besides a professional, you receive personal support and that makes the additional value of the mentoring program.
How mentorship program affected your professional and personal growth and development?
Mentorship helped me a lot to grow in all fields, both professionally and personally. I got bunch of advice and experience, so It was easier for me to make decisions in my life. I've learned a lot along the way, and I hope it will continue like this in the future.
How mentorship helped you find your job?
In the time I applied for the mentorship program, I've been already employed, but the mentorship made me much more employable. I became a better professional, and I improved my social skills as well.
What are the next steps for you and how do you plan to contribute back to BiH?
My plans are related to further professional development and career improvement. I'm contributing to NGO sector as a mentor, educator and volunteer in Bosnia & Herzegovina Futures Foundation and other organizations.
What do you recommend to other students?
My advice to every student is not to take everything they hear about education system for granted. It is not truth that everything is black and white. Combine informal and formal education with mentoring program and that is success recipe.
